About Me

Hello and thank you for taking the time to view my blog. My name is Paula and I live in Lanarkshire, Scotland. I started tracing my family history in 2014 and it has become a real passion. My roots are in Scotland and Ireland and I am currently researching family in Scotland, Ireland, USA, Canada and Australia. I started my blog as a way of sharing my family stories and in the hope that I might connect with some distant cousins. If you recognise any of the names on my blog posts and think we might be related, please feel free to get in touch. If you would like any further information relating to any of my research or if you have any information that could help me I would love to hear from you.

  1. Research for my book shows that James Cairns b 1817 Kleish KRS, who married Margaret Bird in West Lothian in1840, then Janet Walker, in Carluke in 1860, was grandfather to Janet Cairns. After exhaustive search, Janet remains my best bet for potential biological great grandmother. That conclusion was reached before finding this: none of the principals, adoptive or biological were originally of Carluke. Yet its 1885 Valuation Roll housed all together between 388 and 413 Braidwood Station – to include names of Cairns, Walker, Dickson, McKinlay, French,McCutheon and Reston. I love me some Carluke!

  2. I see we have some similar locations of interest in Lanarkshire and Ayrshire. Probably not close enough to connect, and I do not recognise any surnames on a quick glance. But who knows. Some similarities in social history – not just the transportation to Australia. My blog has person-oriented stories too – not just a bare tree – but mine are much longer and rambling ones! I’ll try to avoid this comment turning in to one.
Is there any chance you can add a search field to the blog – though I suppose I can ask google to just search within the domain.
Keep up the good work, this looks full of good stuff.

  3. Hi Paula,
Such a sad tale but very enlightening. For a while I’d been curious as to what had happened to Michael Keenan and Maria McLachlan (my great great great great grandparents). I discovered they died the same year but the limited records I had said they had died in a mining flood which made little sense to me. John Keenan was my great grandmother, Lizzie O’Brien’s (neé Boyle), grandfather. John married Sarah Lawlor and their daughter, Elizabeth Keenan was Lizzie’s mother. Lizzie O’Brien went on marry Andrew O’Brien and had a large family in Prestonpans, East Lothian, where many still reside today. Thank you for sharing this story, I will pass it on to family members.

    • Hi Andrew
Thank you for visiting my blog. I’m glad you’ve found some useful information. Thanks too for providing me with details of John’s descendants. I had details of his marriage and children but nothing further.
It’s always nice to hear from family and to know that the stories have been helpful to others so I really appreciate you taking the time to comment.

      Kind regards
      Paula

  4. Hi Paula, my name is Thomas Dobbin and Edith you mentioned in your blog was my mother. Absolutely fascinating information about my Aunt Mary whom I remember visiting when she lived in Cartland Tower, East Kilbride in her later years. Being the youngest of 7, I din’t remember too much about Aunt Mary but I know my older siblings will have much more info. I also live in Lanarkshire btw, having been born in Cleland and now residing in Wishaw
