Today would have been my Uncle Dan’s 97th birthday. He was born in Newmains, Lanarkshire on 4 May 1923. He was my mother’s only brother and the only one of her siblings to leave Newmains. After his time in the army during he settled in Luton, Bedfordshire. He and his family were regular visitors to Newmains. One of my earliest memories, in fact, is of Uncle Dan and Auntie Nellie coming to my house to visit my new baby sister.

The photograph was taken at Edinburgh Castle. It shows Daniel with his father and son. Today also marks the anniversary of my grandfather’s death. He died on 4 May 1968. It’s nice to see them enjoying a family day out.
I found a nice wee story about Uncle Dan from the Wishaw Press in 1936.
In 1937 the paper followed it up by publishing his full story.
I forwarded the articles to my cousin (who is in the photo above) and I was happy to discover that the article and the certificate are still in the family and beautifully displayed.
Great story Paula, Theresa, Michael, Stephen, Frances et. al will love the story you’ve unearthed in archives and esp. that it’s framed.

Thanks Allan. Michael sent me the picture of the framed certificate. It’s such a nice thing to have. I love finding stories in the newspapers. Especially when it’s good news!

Great story – both yours and Uncle Daniel’s. I guess great writers run in the family! 🙂
