I’ve discovered this old photograph and I would love to know the story behind it. The picture is slightly damaged and there are no names or dates on the back. I believe the man on the left is my grandfather Hugh Brawley who was born in 1899. I see a bit of a family resemblance in the man on the right but I’m not sure. Hugh was one of 12 children and had 7 brothers. His siblings were born between 1887 and 1908. I don’t all 4 men/boys are siblings.
The photo was taken in Newmains, Lanarkshire where Hugh grew up (Newmains is embossed on the picture). Could it have been for a show or local event? Anyone have any ideas?
UPDATE
It’s been suggested that this could be from the village gala day. Having checked the newspaper archives it seems that Newmains gala day organised by the Co-operative Society continued during the war years. I think my granda looks really young in the picture so could this have been before he joined the army?
No idea Paula. I’m sure I’ve seen this one before though and it sure looks like our granddad on the far left. The man beside him also looks like a Brawley. Possible a gala day during the 20s?
